Julia Kouneski presents Sensual Cannibalism @ AOT 8/29

Sensual Cannibalism - A Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica Lecture Experience
Saturday, August 29, 2009, 7-11PM with lecture beginning at 8:30PM

The Art of This One-Nighter Series is pleased to present Sensual Cannibalism, a unique eveing of installation and presentations by local emerging artist Julia Kouneski. This ambitious event combines installation, participation and an experimental lecture based on the artist's recent research of Brazilian artists Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica.
Out of the violent military dictatorship of 1960's Brazil came two very singular and powerful forces in art, those of Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica. Eventual contributors of the Tropicália and Neoconcreto movements, Clark and Oiticica demonstrated art's subjective and organic qualities by working at the margins of capitalism, reframing modernist aesthetic issues by translating them directly into life and body. Believing an artwork was not static but something that should be manipulated by the spectator, their individual critiques of artistic institutions and avant-garde movements developed original vocabularies of interactivity and immateriality in which an object's meaning was derived from the participation of the viewer. Both Clark's sensorial experiments of the subjective and psychological and Oiticica's explorations of the social, cultural and environmental constructed a new aesthetic based on the relative, ephemeral, participatory, conceptual and perceptual, creating a legacy that continues to guide artists of all disciplines today.
For this One-Nighter event, Kouneski presents images, video, texts, interviews and her personal experiences of her research and travel to Rio de Janeiro. To further illuminate the work of these artists, as well as the viewer's experience, this experimental lecture will take place on the gallery floor with the audience flat on their backs to view this exceptional presentation projected on the ceiling.
